Opportunities for Competency Support of Virginia Cooperative Extension Professionals at the Colleague Stage

This study focused on the professional development needs of Cooperative Extension agents and specialists with between four seven years experience, placing them roughly within colleague career stage. Data were collected through focus groups validated member checking use a modified World Café approach. A research team collaborated, increasing reliability findings intentional reflection in findings. Areas competency strength weakness vary for specialists, specific topic areas competencies vary. While many emergent identified this fit framework Harder et al. (2011) previous studies, more identified. However, top priorities included communication, educational design, leadership, budget fiscal management. Attention to these can increase ability professionals work effectively productively. Providing need both support collegiality organization. Supporting stage their growth will position well advancing additional stages Extension.
